Hale, Dell, and Orelia stared at the blast door while the voice came over the keypad’s speaker again.

“Let me in or I’ll be forced to break the door down,” Sillix said in her unsettlingly calm tone.

“She can’t do that… can she?” Orelia asked.

“She can if she has the right ordnance,” Hale replied, remembering that Thatticus had said she’d already placed a motion-sensitive explosive in the hallway upstairs. “I wouldn’t put it past her to be able to blow her way through anything.”

“Just like she’s blasted a hole straight to the middle of my heart,” Dell added with a hand on his chest.

Hale cast him a wry smile. “Hold on to that thought.”

“Ain’t no getting rid of it, saba.”

Orelia glanced over her shoulder at the door with Kull behind it. “He really killed her family?”

Hale gave her a grim look. “According to her testimony, Sillix gave birth to three children on Thoria. The first two were born excreants. She sacrificed them to Ki Tuck herself. But the third was born whole, except local magistrates didn’t believe it was possible… said she had a cursed womb. So they sent someone to oversee a third reallocation. When she refused, they gave her husband the scarlet sash, and then the child. From that day forward, she’s been consumed with avenging their deaths and killing the person responsible.”

Orelia’s face went pale. “Let me guess. Sedarious Kull.”

“Yeah.”"
